A report was issued this week by an independent warranty firm indicating that the xbox 360 has a 16.4% failure rate.  Microsoft officials said they had not yet seen the report, but they of course are questioning its validity.  The report did not explicitly state the nature of the problems in the xbox 360′s of the owners surveyed.  But it’s safe to assume that most of those problems have to do with the xbox 3 red lights problem.

The sample size of the survey was 1000 units.  The warranty issuer, a company called SquareTrade, said of that sample size of 1000 warrantees, 16.4% had resulted in service calls and more than half of those 16.4% were for general hardware failures, of which the 3 red lights problem falls into.

Microsoft’s response?  "Microsoft does not comment on hardware failure rates, nor do we comment on speculation". While this survey doesn’t exactly ring of speculation to this writer.  The survey  seems to follow all the basic guidelines of statistical validity.  Even if it out is off by a percent or two.  There is plenty of other evidence that the failure rate of the xbox 360 is at least this high and in many cases higher.  We have heard of failure rates in the 30 plus percent range.  But of course Microsoft being Microsoft, stonewalling is their typical response, at least early on.  But when push comes to shove, they’ll come around and do the right thing.  Hopefully.
