A backhoe is the rear digging arm which you see on the back of the classic JCB style excavator.  They are also sometimes known as a rear actor, or back actor.  The part of the backhoe which extends immediately from the back of the excavator is known as the boom whereas the second part of the arm (a bit like the forearm part of a human arm) is known as the dipper or dipperstick.  These types of excavators are known as a backhoe loader.  Although in America they are often called a tractor loader backhoe (TLB).Where the boom meets the vehicle it is attached by a pivot called a kingpost. This allows for the backhoe to swing from left to right.  Even when this type of arm is attached to the front of a skid loader, it is still known as a backhoe.  Although most backhoes have a similar kind of operation and look about them, there are also many different variations of the theme.
