Apply project management disciplines to IT projects
IT projects are probably the most prone to cost over runs and blow outs in delivery times. IT projects, particularly development projects just have that one off element which can lead to surprises. Fortunately in recent years there have been moves to ensure project management disciplines are applied to IT projects, delivering good outcomes on budget and to schedule. It is a recognised skill set and the industry has benefited greatly from using recognised project management methods. The technical risk of undertaking new developments is still present, but by applying project management methods and systems the correct controls can be implemented and risks minimised.
